Since embracing a lifestyle change this past January, I have learned a LOT about fueling my body with the right things. Water has become a huge part of that equation as well. I have always read articles about WHY drinking water was important, but I never paid it that much attention until I was consciously trying to make a change. Most Americans are chronically dehydrated and don’t even realize it. I am pretty sure I was falling in this category– I was having headaches frequently, and I noticed my skin, especially on my face, wasn’t as soft as it used to be. The body is good at giving us warning signs if we are paying attention. Now that summer is here and we are more on-the-go, it can be tough to drink as much water as I normally would if I was just at home. Here’s a few tricks that help me stay hydrated, even on the go.
Set small goal increments.
I try to have 20oz of water drank by 9am, another 20oz by 10am, etc. If it helps, set an alarm on your phone to help you stay on track. My daily goal is 128 ounces, or 1 gallon of water. If you set out with smaller goals, they seem easier to obtain.
Carry water with you at all times.
I like to carry a water bottle with me in my car or my purse so that I can stay hydrated while I am out and about. CVS Health and The Coca-Cola Company have teamed up to help customers satisfy their body’s thirst for wellness with “Life Quenching”: a movement to encourage and remind people to stay hydrated. Last time I was out, I stopped at CVS and grabbed a couple bottles of smartwater and vitaminwater. This way I can stay on top of my water drinking goals even when running arrands or taking the kids to the pool or park. Limit caffeinated beverages.
I love a cup of coffee as much as the next person, but caffeine causes your body to lose fluids more rapidly. In the summer time when our bodies are losing more water anyways due to heat, it’s best to drink more water to help replenish. Beat the heat. Stay hydrated.
