My husband has made several pieces of furniture for our home, including our headboard , kitchen table, and some shelves for the living room. After moving some furniture around last year, we moved the coffee table and matching end tables to a small sitting area in our breezeway. This meant we needed two end tables for the living room. We did some perusing on Pinterest and I found this plan, and Brandon used that as inspiration for an end table.
This photo was taken before we added a coat of darker stain to the top of the table, but I painted the rest with Annie Sloan chalk paint in cream. Here’s how it looks in the living room:
It turned out really nice, and Brandon is pretty proud of it! The next table he built for the living room is just a small table that fits in between the sectional and the recliner. We didn’t have a lot of room to work with, but I wanted something to be able to set my coffee cup or a book on. Here’s what he came up with:
It fits the X theme of the other one, and fits perfectly in between!
With all of our DIY furniture and accessories in the house, it’s important to care for them so they last for years to come. Although we have some other DIY projects on our dream list, we love how these tables turned out for our home. It’s been nice that Brandon has been able to build some of our furniture to fit the farmhouse scheme of our home. I hope they last for a LONG time and that our kids and their kids eventually get use out of them!
Here’s a couple of ways to take care of DIY furniture:
- Use good quality products to dust and clean with. For me, it’s Pledge®! Pledge® Orange Clean Furniture Spray can be used to dust, shine and protect a variety of household surfaces including wood, laminate, stainless steel, leather, marble, granite and plastic, making it perfect for the DIY furniture we have. I just spray on a rag then carefully wipe the furniture off, being sure to get the corners of the X’s. It features Allergens Trappers® to remove dust and up to 90% of the allergens found in dust, meaning my furniture will look great for years to come.
- Don’t let drinks sit directly on tables made from reclaimed wood. The water can soak in and leave spots, so always use a coaster. Most of the time it will dry ok, but if you are wanting to preserve the life of your tables, better safe than sorry!
- Be sure your decor won’t scratch the tables or cause long term damage. I made the mistake of sliding something across our farmhouse kitchen table and putting a huge scratch in it. I didn’t realize how soft the wood was. Trust me when I say it pays to pay attention.
I also really love Pledge® Multi Surface Everyday Cleaner with Glade® Rainshower® for my decor pieces and for the bathrooms. It’s an all purpose cleaner that cleans smudges without ruining the finish. It worked great on my barnwood shelves and the picture frames that they hold.
